'discreet' pedal magnet

Postby Woody » 22 Nov 2013 11:15

Seeing as I've got my Cadence sensor in the drawer I figure I may as well put it on my CX bike (hopefully it'll cope off road?) but....the clearance between the pedal and the rear stays is too small for the magnet :(
Looking at the options of those 'discreet magnets' which attach behind the pedal axle but they don't seem too sturdy? Has anyone used them? Do they stay in place, even if glued, or am I likely to lose it in the first five minutes?

i.e. should I bother?

the sticky pads on the Garmin ones are pretty good, mines stayed on for four years without issue.

if you're worried though they are designed to have a cable tie around as a backup too

Any chance you could stick the magnet to the top/bottom of the crank arm (as it sweeps past the sensor)? It should still pick up from there if things are that close.
I had fun once. It was awful.

Can you not just buy some of these?

Should be the same size as the pedal axle, couple of drops of cyanoacrylate to lock it in place (bit not so much you can't remove it), it it won't go anywhere. Lots of people use them as discrete magnets. With any luck the magnet force is strong enough you don't even need to glue them. Shouldn't stick out too far either and the sensor doesn't need to be too close as they are very strong.

Cheers Bopo that's a good idea to try if all else fails and yeah Jibby they're the kind of magnets I was talking about, just wondered if anyone had used them? cyanoacrylate....I'm gonna assume that's super glue  Shouldn't give me any problems when it comes to removing the pedal should it?

I use the ebay magnets superglued on for both my road and TT bike and work fine.

I got a pack of 10 and just stuck it magnetically (no glue) to the pedal axle...it's still there but I've only been on the road! Seems to be OK but the big test will be off road/trails.
