700x35c tyres ......

Postby Bendy Ben » 31 Aug 2015 17:06

stupid question time - on my cyclocross bike I have 700x35c Sammy slick tyres. I love them.

however I would like less nobbly tyres for winter road training - any suggestions ? and what size inner tube should I get ? a normal 700c tube ?

cheers

I just replace my cross tyres with some 700x25 gatorskins. Now on some vredesteins though. Just check the rim width and find a winter road tyre.

I run 27mm Vittoria Open Pave on my training wheels all year round and they're awesome... if I had clearance for fatter tyres then I would. If you like the comfort of fat tyres then tyres like Paselas (and plenty of others) have enough grip for wet road use and go up to 37mm.

It's too cold/wet to be riding the bike in the winter, so I suggest staying indoors with a nice mug of coffee, a pile of your favourite cakes and some glossy specialist interest magazines to peruse

Without a shadow of doubt they are super comfy

Might just keep em on !

Inner tubes .... Normal 700c tubes ? The width doesn't matter does it ?

You tend to get 2 or more sizes of tubes, 18-23/25 and 25+. Chose a diameter based on the tyre.

As Jibby says, when a tube is designated as "700 x 18/23" the " 18/23 bit refers to the width and says it's suitable for tyres between 18mm and 23mm wide. However if you've ever pumped a tube up without it being inside a tyre you'll see that they are easily capable of inflating several times their designated size. I've never heard of anyone having a problem from using a slightly mis-sized inner tube in a tyre, although there may be a fractionally increased risk of puncture.
