Just a quick squeeze - you'll soon learn what it feels like.

Once a week should be ok.

There are other things you want to check on a regular basis. A bike has a lot less tolerance than a car. And your life and safety depends on it.

oiling chain and gears. Cleaning too.
Checking brakes are ok.

Checking for rattles and rubs. (Indicates things coming lose)

For me, the rule is to look on the tyre wall to see what the maximum is, then pump the buggers up to that before every ride (so long as it doesn't exceed the rating of the wheel)

For you, Sarah, I'd agree that a quick squeeze before you ride ("This is a colleague announcement: Kevy to the entendre section, please") is a must and you'll quickly get used to how firm it is and if it needs a quick blow before you get going. Oh dear...

I'm also in full agreement with Ian about keeping your eyes and ears open for anything that changes. I had it instilled in me from an early age by my old man, an airframes and engines fitter in the Fleet Air Arm, that "cleaning is the first line of maintenance" as that's your early opportunity to spot anything wearing, rusting, moving etc.
I had fun once. It was awful.

Something Bendy does to his bike more often than actually riding it... ;)

I can't get the hang of the squeezing thing, it feels hard to me until it gets nearly flat! I think I will check it at the weekends and let the gauge do the work :D

Mr TST does all that for me  I tell him if it's making a noise or something and he sorts it out for me.

Erm, not too good at that bit  If the weather is nice this weekend I'll give her the once over and make her sparkly again! Don't mind cleaning them so much in the summer, but it's too cold this time of year. Although that's probably when she needs it most!
