How long does a turbo last?

Just that really.... wondering whether this looks healthy:



(note dainty scattering of shredded tyre in the background - might this wear to the roller be a cause?)

... and given that my turbo seems to be my main weapon in my attempted journey to TT awesomeness, whether it's time to start looking for a new one (perhaps that works more accurately with virtual power)?

Michael Hutchinson mentioned something about having worn out 6 turbos the other day. I think his last one or two years

Some of them have replaceable roller for just that reason...

That said mine looks healthy after lots of abuse. Looks like the wheel has been over tight

So.... as a subsidiary shopping related question.... any turbo recommendations?

a) Useful to have something like the Tacx Flow that gives power readings?
b) Go with something like the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine that apparently works well with Trainer Road, and stick with virtual power?
c) Stick with very cheap option (like another Cycleops Mag) on account of being less than half the price?
d) Shut up and work my way through that pile of part used road tyres at the back of the man shed with the turbo I have got

B or D. The Flow, for power reading from the head unit, is extremely inconsistent. Same constant wheel speed 10 mins in will give very different readings 30 mins in, after it's warmer.

Very funny.... remember that I am the person who struggles to maintain sufficient concentration when out on the road to avoid collisions with the kerb etc, and that my turbo lives up a ladder on a mezzanine level (visions of flying off rollers and causing all sorts of damage to both delicate carbon fibre bike and the cars below)
