Silly silly boy....rusty chain/cassette

Postby Woody » 24 Feb 2014 13:58

So...guess who's been a numpty! I've not been on my bike since I've had knee issues - a long time! But I'm thinking of getting back on the old steed and so I've just got her out of the shed and the chain/cassette have rusted up! I guess I must have put it away wet :(

Is there anything I could soak the chain/cassette in to remove the rust (rather than anything abrasive like wire wool/brush)

Silly.....silly boy

if you want to get the cassette clean then pop it off and dump it in something suitably chemically - even white spirit/clean spirit will do a job. it's only a set of metal plates after all.

the chain... personally i wouldn't dunk it, you only have to go adding lots more lube to it afterwards to make up for what you've lost. i know some people like the chain bath type cleaners but i don't.

i'd lightly wet some rags in white/clean spirit / degreaser and wipe the chain a few times and then add some fresh (probably wet) lubricant. if you are really offended by the rust then you could spend a bit more time and slowly work your way through the links of the chain making them all clean before adding the lube.

crc also have very good chain offers - shimano 105 for £12, ultegra for £19 and sram 1051 for £15. the latter, like the kmc, will come with a quicklink rather than a joining pin.
