Like j.e said, you won't notice the difference between good tyres.

Set yourself a budget, aiming for decent tyres because they last and you spend less time at the roadside swearing at your pump. Then get whatever is on sale at the time.

I have gatorskins on my everyday wheels, because they are highly recommended as being bloody tough.

I have GP4000s on my nice wheels, because they were on sale. And look here... GP4000 twin pack on sale again (£49.44)!!
I had fun once. It was awful.

Someone somewhere has published a chart of rolling resistance for a wide range of tyres (tubs and clinchers) but I can't find it now.

set a budget and buy the fastest you can from that list. You mightn't FEEL the difference but you know you'll be faster :-)
