Adjusting RD

Postby Latinobeat » 26 Oct 2013 15:36

Ok so I have managed to change my rear cassette from an 11-25 to a less hernia inducing 11-28, however I can't get the gears adjusted to be able to use the full range. I can get 12-28 or 11-24 but for the life of me can't get the bloody thing to go from 11-28. I have focused my attention on the barrel adjuster, but no joy. Is this one for the LBS or am I missing something obvious?
I'd go with the alloys and lose a few pounds!

 not impossible, but in just went and counted the cassette that I took off, it's definitely a 10 speed, thankfully.

Are you testing it in the smallest chaining? I'm wondering if chain length is an issue.

I wondered that, but the one I took off didn't have one and the packaging indicated that it might not be needed, so went for a straight swap. The wheels are Shimano RS30s which are 8,9,10 speed compatible, so I'd have thought a spacer wouldn't be needed with a 10 speed cassette, but I'm confounded. I've left it as a 12-28 at the moment and it shifts fine, just needs a double shift to come down from 28 to 24.

No, I'm testing on the big ring.

try the small ring, just in case the chain line/angle is causing an issue with the larger sprocket and the chain length. there is no logical reason why it would be any different, but you never know!

If you put a larger big sprocket, wouldn't you need to readjust the B-tension screw on the derailleur (to give the chain enough space)? Also - perhaps the H / L screws need realigning?

There's a good video here that could help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPLiW-0zLa4

The obvious solution is to buy a new bike...
