Valve extenders

Postby Bendy Ben » 28 Jul 2013 15:36

In the last couple of weeks my rear tub has been going flat overnight. Pumping it up to 120psi of an evening, riding the next day then that evening it's probably at 50psi - very soft.

I've used a zipp valve extender ( pair) for ages but for some reasons the rear extender seems to be allowing air to escape.

I've just tested this by fitting tub with a valve extender and pumping to 100psi, you can simply hear the air escaping !! Inflating the tub without a valve extender it holds air fine. Put the wheel in the floor and push down on it to replicate a riders weight and it's gushes out. :o

So it looks as if I need a new valve extender.

I have a continental one spare but that for some reason doesn't screw into the valve !!!

Any suggestions on what is going on or recommendations for extenders... Need to get this sorted for the ride London 100 in a week. ( that's now a massive cock up too)

Story of my life.

They are snake oil. I am surprised they ever work.

What type of extenders are you using, the ones that just extend, or the ones that you use with a removable core?

Have you tried using Teflon tape to seal the threads?

Using a zipp extenders ( just screws on - not the removable core type)

I'm guessing I just need to get to the LBS and buy a new one.

Interestingly I use the same zipp one on the front and its been fine, used them on my last set if tubs and again no problems.

I've even used 3 different brands of tub ( Tuffo carbon, continental and Vittoria and it's allows air to escape on all three - as all 3 hold pressure without the extender my detective skills deduce the valve extender is somehow broken)

Annoying but fixable I'm sure

Extra long valve rather than extender?
