Which Garmin

Postby Sir Jibbenstein » 30 May 2013 18:20

I'm in the market for a new toy. I can barely afford one, so need to get it right though.

Swim watch strap has broken again. I'm sure there is a Heath Robinson way to fix it, but that isn't the point. So I need a new one. Was thinking of going down the Garmin Swim route. I tried using my 310 in the pool at Les Stables, but it just isn't the same.

Then while at Les Stables my Garmin refused to boot up for a brick session (worked fine the rest of the time) and it got me thinking maybe I should just pay a little more and buy once so to speak. My 310XT seems to just keep on going, but it does have the odd hissy fit, and I wonder how long it will last, and frankly I'd be naked without it. So I got thinking about a 910XT...

What is the verdict from those that have a 910? Is the pool swimming any good? Has anyone upgraded from a 310 to a 910? Is it worth it on that alone? Or should I get a Garmin Swim and buy my time with the 310 a bit longer?

910

Used it in the pool & OW - never missed a trick. Very impressive.

buy the 910 used the new still in package HR belt with your old garmin and sell on flea bay to help offset the costs.

I'm sure our training requirements are not very similar but I find the 910xt really good in the pool.

I upgraded from a 305 to the 910 and is well worth the money (sell your old stuff on eBay). Unfortunately I can't vouch for how good it is when swimming, but it works in the rain if that's any help?

I had to exchange my 910 as its altimeter was faulty, but still love it to bits. Hardly ever misses a bit, and records more metrics than you could ever imagine, including Sibbs' favourite Wolf, and its normalised version, I.e. swim efficiency (if you tend to do your swims in funny pool lengths like 2/3 of a furlong).

One negative comment (more towards Garmin Connect than the watch itself): if you keep it on & running for the drills, it can come up with fantastic records - as it tries to categorise your superman drill as backstroke or sth. Once recorded, you can't change the details of a length - they could do with a "swim drill" style category on GC.

Quite happy with my 310xt / basic poolmate combo - though I suspect I don't really exploit half the features of either... glorified stopwatches really...

How about the Powertap Pro+, that will work with the 310xt ant+, whereas it won't give you an average power reading ,it just gives you an instant power reading, IF you set it to an small lap average say, 1km, then it will give you a nice ave reading, so if you can get it built into a nice Disc wheel say, you can have a speedy piece of bling, a piece of kit that provides good feedback, and you don't need to spend money on a new Garmin, there, made you faster, and saved you money, bargain.

i find the 910xt gives me really odd results in the pool but is awesome in OW - and its designed for your wetsuit to come off over it! if you'd said you couldve given mine a try as its not like i ran much!

the 910xt is a pain in the tits to get off with a wettie - but its never missed a beat with me so far and I've had it a good few months now. It charges up so bloody fast as well...compared to my 305.

Great bit of kit
