Well I have got to the bottom of it.

"Expensive parts (shimano) don't last as long as cheaper parts. Nor do they have a guarantee on wear and tear."

Phew that's a relief, I thought I was doing something wrong.

As you can imagine, a rather heated exchange ensued.

Not as strange as it seems, something that is finely tuned, requires constant maintanence, F1 cars for example, they may be light but the components get damaged easily, because their tolerances are so fine, rather like me, have have little tolerance and am finely tuned.

Lightweight, doesn't always mean strong as well, the more expensive, the more maintenance, although it is a Bell curve, cheap breaks easily too, just find your apex on the graph.

And having said that, my head bearings finally appear to have rolled over and died on my little jaunt around the New Forest today.

Just about to get my scruffies on and head out into the garage to see if I can work a miracle with some grease and a fecking big spanner.

Is kevy involved in this in any way ?

Having done some research, it appears Dura Ace BB have a life expectancy of 400 miles, which is about right. 400 miles   that is fecking ridiculous.

Ultegra fares slightly better but not a lot.

If Shimano ones are rubbish then why not opt for a different make like Hope or Chris King? More expensive but claim to be far more durable.

Ultegra BB on my Dolan has done 4500km recorded on Endo and a fair bit before that, too.

Agree that 400 miles is totally crap, though.

I have a Shimano BB that is knackered. But it hasn't had a service in 22 years.

Sealed bearing DO come apart, it seems... it's just a bit fiddly. Went on a voyage of discovery and after much swearing and playing 'hunt the bearing you've just dropped' I have them cleaned, re-packed and re-fitted. It's all a bit tighter than I'd like, but at least it isn't rattling around and possibly damaging my carbon frame. New ones needed, it seems, but not an emergency before next weekend.

It was a great excuse, too. Own goal. Idiot.

BS surely? where did that come from? I'd have thought it's at least a couple of hundred to break it in and get it running smoothly, but what do I know....
