Lifespan of running shoes

Postby kfjatek » 12 Feb 2013 23:59

I've had my Newtons since last summer and I'm beginning to wonder if they shouldn't be retired from service (need to check the mileage on them).

How long (or rather how far) before you change your training shoes?

I retire them when the cushioning seems trashed enough to start causing me niggly injuries. Last pair went for about 800miles, but it depends on the brand/type and what sort of runner you are. I was getting more calf/achilles/hamstring issues than I was expecting for the volume/intensity of running I was doing.

Most quote 500 miles, but it is dependent on numerous factors, shoe type / weight / running style etc

eg. racing flats will wear out a lot quicker than a more robust stability shoe - I generally work on the 500 mile rule though and try to have a few pairs on the go at the same time.

I track the distance covered by setting a personal challenge in Endo and just logging the distance covered.

I purchased my current Newtons at the end of Nov and they are currently at a distance of 443km, I have a new pair due to be delivered shortly, so the new ones will be used for my long runs, the older ones for my shorter runs once I hit 800km, I will order a new pair and so the cycle continues.

If you use Strava, you can break down your workouts further by training shoes, rather than just overall distance.

good points from gav - i track my shoe mileage with sportstracks, although i could use endo or strava as easily i guess.

i usually buy a new pair of running shoes each year and 'retire' the previous years to my office for my 30min lunchtime runs and speedwork. the new ones then become my home pair for long runs.

Mileage on mine is nowhere near 500 miles yet, so perhaps unconsciously I'm trying to find an excuse to buy a new pair ;-)

The last one I think I exchanged somewhere around the 300-mile mark, but the reason was less wear & tear and more a shift in technique to front/mid foot. The old pair had tons of heel cushioning.

Mine have traditionally 'gone' around 600km. Like Ris I start to see the occurance of niggling injuries, normally ITB related for me. I think my last pair have gone at 500km though as I have been having major knee problems that seem to be easing alongside my purchase of new shoes. Not sure if this earlier wear is because my running has moved from lots of long steady distance to shorter, faster efforts.

Also, I read in an article (from one of the manufacturers, so possibly a pinch of salt required) that the rubber sole is designed to last longer than the cushioning, so they may not look worn even though the foam cushioning is now useless.

this is certainly true of my last pair - the soles look pretty much untouched but the cushioning has clearly gone to the dogs. that may also be because i weigh less than the shoes.
