And 700x23s are the ones you want
No? Tough. We're doing it.

shit....how do I know what size tyres I need!? 700 obviously x 20? 23? 25?

Everywhere has them on sale now it is winter. Also try PBK and Ribble as they usually have better offers than wiggle. You'll want 23s, unless you have a very delicate ass and need the slighty softer, but slower ride of 25s

25s not necessarily slower - and for a winter ride the aero benefit of 23s might not be as relevant as the rough ride improvement of 25s.*

25 certainly give you a smoother ride. Especially if you are of the heavier disposition. I have them on the tandem ;)

You need to make sure that you have enough clearance if wanting to put 25s and mudguards and stuff in your dandy-doo carbon fibre narrow clearance frame.

Ah...ok, so...all sizes will fit? it's the 700 that's the important bit? (circumference of the wheel) am I assuming then that 20 will have less in contact with the ground therefore better rolling resistance (and slight aero advantage because they're thinner) but the pay off is less air in the tyre so a less comfortable ride? My normal wheels are 23 so I'll probably just go with them but it's good to pick up this techno stuff when I can!

No no no no no.

The width of your tyre should be right for the width of your wheel, or you screw up a high percentage of the aero benefit on leading and trailing edges. Hence the move to wide wheels by Zipp, HED, Flo etc etc.

A wider tyre will give you a more comfy ride, as there's more air in there, a narrower tyre will be a little harser, but these are race wheels so aero matters more than all else...

...well it doesn't, as you also want lower rolling resistance, but balance this against puncture proofing depending on race length/ course/ road quality.

What width are your wheels, as in the rim width?

(FWIW after a looooot of research I went with a Conti GP4000s on the rear, and Conti Attack on the front as I have different wheels - wide Flo disc rear, HED 3 on front)

....oh and everyone racing on clinchers should switch to latex tubes comfier ride, lower rolling resistance, and better puncture proofing - just make sure you mount them right!!

Seconded.

And don't forget to pump them up before every ride too.

And make sure there's enough clearance on the brakes and frame for wider tyres.

As mentioned http://www.probikekit.com/uk/components ... wifli.html
Ratios of the 11-32 - 11-12-13-15-17-19-22-25-28-32
http://www.bikeradar.com/news/article/c ... lta-35156/

I use a SRAM PG1070
11-28 : 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 19, 22, 25, 28 which when you compare it with the
11-23 : 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 21, 23 has all the close gears for snicking through but enough oomph for steep climbs

I take it you have a Standard set up? The smallest inner you can get is a 38

Have a look here as well

It seemed like a good idea at the time :? .

Mick I have the SRAM Wifli on the planet X i brought up for our ride your welcome to have trial next time I get out with you.
Its basically a med cage R?D so you can run a 11-32 cassette. Without it there is no way my fat arse would have got up the hills in the Lakes and North Pennines without it.
I recently went for a new set of tyre to match up to some Reynolds forty six wheels and went for the Conti attack/force combo havn't used them yet but these were chosen after days of review reading.

Either way get them sorted and down our way for a pre christmas ride ;)
