Gearing and hub question

Postby Bendy Ben » 11 Mar 2010 00:27

I have got some carbon wheels and tubs for the odd race I enter.... They have a campag hub.

If I get a new bike with SRAM gears, rear cassette etc are they compatible.

Basicly what I'm asking is are SRAM compatible with Campag or Shimano.

I know we covered it at Mike Maintenance day but I forgotten.

Cheers All.

I don't think so, I believe Campag are not compatible with either SRAM or Shimano,

Shimano and SRAM may have some interchangeability but I think it is best to stick within brands.

Since you have the wheels already, I guess that means you *HAVE TO* buy a sexy italian thoroughbred to go with them doesn't it? :D

let me help:

Hold on!! ( I'm confused - this happens all to often)

If I buy a bike with SRAM and then want to fit aftermarket wheels - your saying I can't !!!

Cos I only know of campag and shimano

Tell me I'm being thick.....,

You can, but they need to be compatible.

Hubs will either fit Campag, or SRAM/Shimano, you need to make sure you get the right hub.

A Campag cassette wont fit a SRAM/Shimnao hub, and vice-versa. Likeiwse SRAM/Shimano mechs wont work on Campag, and again vice-versa.

And it's best not to mix SRAM and Shimano together.

I think that's right anyway

Just like you should never mix wrangler jeans with a Levi jacket

as far as the rear hubs go sram cassettes will fit a shimano rear hub ok (my tiagra running bike came with a sram cassette), but campag is off by itself, so if you have a campag hub then it's not going to take sram or shimano.

you can take the hub off the wheel if you really want to and put a different one in, but that seems like a lot of mucking about if you ask me.

SRAM have 1:1 actuation which I think they call "exact actuation" these days. IMO it provides a more positive, crisp shifting experience certainly with my MTB SRAM groupset. I think Shimano used to be and may still be 1:2 actuation so if you mix components then the shifting accuracy isn't as good and might be one or two geras you can't hit. I wouldn't mix shimano shifters with SRAM derailleurs or vice versa for that reason.

I thought I'd seen a converter from campag to shimano cassettes... searching Google seems that the conversion only really works from shimano freehub to accept campag cassette. However, come up with this but for the price you may as well get wheel rebuilt fully with a new hub that has a shimano freehub!!!

https://clemenzo.com/index.php/component/page,shop.product_details/flypage,shop.flypage/product_id,83/category_id,34/manufacturer_id,0/option,com_virtuemart/Itemid,36/lang,en/

You may be able to have the freehub changed only, but depends on the manufacturer of your hub - maybe ask Bridgetown if its possible for your wheel without any major work - in most cases it just requires the right sized spacers.

i had a full shimano ultegra sl groupset fitted to my bike and can happily swap the rear cassette for a sram one and regularly do, but as mentioned by others campag is a different breed and doesn't fit.

my basic knowledge of bikes comes out here, couldn't you just swap out the freehub rather than the whole thing?
