New bike pump

Postby Two-Stroke Tart » 17 Sep 2014 11:01

Not sure if I should be posting this here or elsewhere, but we are looking for a floor standing bike pump and wondered if people could recommend one. We don't want to spend too much as it doesn't need to be anything fancy, but it needs to do both sorts of bike tyre valves. I can't remember what they are called, but it needs to do the tyres on Jessica (my road bike) and Olivia (my trundling bike), which apparently are different. I'm sure Mr TST did tell me, but my brain's not build for holding that sort of information for too long and I've forgotten!

google "track pump"

presta (for road bike - the little one)
schrader (for MTB and cars - the big one)

Pay your money and take your choice. Having a pressure gauge is nice to have.

jon.e will also talk about the Woods valve. They might use this in some countries still. But you are unlikely to come across it.

My £10 one from Decathlon, with pressure gauge, is still going strong after 5+ years. Reversible valve too.

Looks like it's had a redesign and the price has gone up slightly - http://www.decathlon.co.uk/500-floor-pu ... 03706.html

I just got the cheapest track pump from the nearest bike shop - think it's a Specialized (Air Tool or some similarly silly name) - has a pressure gauge; does both presta & schreader valves without needing to change anything around. 6 years old and still going strong.
Was even very useful when the car had a slow puncture on the way to a race!

I use this, or an older version, and also regularly use it on a slow puncture on a car tyre ( slightly distorted alloy wheel, rather than puncture )

As for the third valve, Woods valve, no real problem, you can buy an adapter for a quid, but they are pretty rare in the UK, but CCS may have seen them on her recent trip to the Netherlands.

I did think about editing that post for Jimba and say the RRP of the Woods valve adapter was £250:00, for the none carbon one,

You can pick one up from about £20 in Halfrauds, which will fit both valve types.

This one goes to 120psi, which should be enough. I have a Topeak model from Halfords which I can't find on the web site... it goes to about 160psi which I like as I often put my tyres up to about 130psi.
I had fun once. It was awful.

I use a Joe Blow too. I also use one to pump up the tyres on my bike...
