Chain and cassettes

Postby AndyC » 12 May 2014 12:04

Well as you probably seen from my race report I need to purchase a new chain and cassette.

I will get the 11-28 cassette. However though does it matter what 10 speed chain I get was looking at the 105 5600 10 speed chain? Is there a real difference between all the chains?

I don't think it matters what 10 speed chain, in terms of compatibility.

FWIW, I think BTown usually recommend KMC chains.

Weight and design is pretty much the only differences. I like kmc chains for the quick link. Makes it easy to take them apart for a good clean or long distance bike transport. IIRC kmc actually make shimano chains, albeit to a different design with the snap of link pin. Kmc wise I'd recommend the x10l for general use, or the x10sl for a race bike. You can pick the SL ones up on eBay from the far east for about £25. They are genuine but OEM parts hence the cheapness.

KMC quick link chain every time

Go bling with a gold one.

All that faffing about with chain splitters etc.

Ssshhh don't tell CCS, but the gold one may be bling, but KMC also do ones with either black, red, or blue links as well, the black or red would go nice on Fluffy. ;)

Yes... Did see those... but my chain is always black whatever colour the manufacturer might have originally made it.

You need a chain whip and a cassette lockring tool to remove the old cassette and install the new one

or get one of these, not top quality tools, but will cover most jobs and by the sounds of your maintenance schedule last you years...
