Racing Through The Dark

The fall and rise of David Millar.

I was impressed. A good if not gripping read, this provides a real insight into the world of cycling. It gives the other side of the coin, life from a dopers perspective, highlighting the preasures riders are subjected to and how hard it is / was to race clean.

He comes clean, doesn't look for sympathy and tbh has made me a little more sympathetic (both to him and other cheats) but not a lot. Could maybe have given a bit more detail about the races themselves, but there was enough in there to keep you interested.

I've taken him at face value, but there remains nagging doubts about how he was actually caught, and he motives for becoming a "clean ambasador" but then I am a cynical old git.

Worth a read.

I read this about 6 months ago, and there was something that bothered me about him. It felt a bit superficial, and compared to Tyler Hamilton's book (which i read immediately after) it seemed that Millar wasn't really up for coming clean. But maybe Hamilton just had a better ghost writer. But also he raised the issue of the courses simply being too hard; day after day of climbing and the only way to keep up (and recover for the next day) was to cheat. Because if one person does it you have to as well...and you finally get the carrot of a salary etc dangled then you have to keep up, and maybe win.

Anyway, what do I know?

I would recommend "Consumed" by Jonathan Budd as well (a fictionalised account) of this issue.
