Night ride

Postby Bendy Ben » 16 Oct 2015 17:22

Jon Elliot and I are riding 85 miles tomorrow night from Salisbury to London.

Despite me not feeling the love for it ( I can't let him down) I'm in two minds as to what bike to use.

My team carbon bike with 50mm tubs or my cannondale cyclocross with 32mm semi tread tyres. Gearing is easier on the cannondale and I'm a tad unfit.

If the weather was shit I'd use the cyclocross but I'm not sure. It's a more relaxed position but I'm worried about the flat speed. I'm not changing or buying any new tyres for it so what should I use ?

Cross bike. You're less likely to see shit in the road at night, so easier to fix tyres are a better idea IMO.

more importantly, what lights have you got for this encounter?

they'll need to be bright, consistent, and last a fair while.

Do you have shoes to match the cx bike? If not, then road bike + matchy shoes

Only got a rear fibre flare and a cat eye el 350

That'll do

And Clare - my mavic shoes match the black and white on the cannondale. All sorted.

Now I'm worried about poor lighting ! Feel ropey too. ( just necked a lemsip) This could be a 2 am DNF

your light needs to be able to last for 5-6h, and probably good enough to light the road with, not just be seen by.

not ridden with a cateye 350, but i'm going to hedge my bets and say that anything that can last 10h on 4aa's isn't going to deliver enough punch for lighting tarmac when you are riding at 15-20mph on unlit roads. i used to ride daily with a torch that could do 150-200 lumens and it would get through 2aa's over 2-3h, and was just about ok for that sort of speed.

i ride with 800-1000 lumens now for unlit road commutes

glad to hear the shoes match. most important thing of all.

So you're saying he needs a separate battery pack type mtb light really
