You aren't capable of doing another ironman...

Postby md6 » 20 Jul 2015 09:00

So, during a discussion about my eating habits since we moved (we have no kitchen so mostly takeaways as salads are dull!) the gf stated that I am not capable of doing another ironman, apparently I couldn't do the training (shush*!) and so wouldn't be capable. SO, the question is, now I am not studying anymore should I enter another IM to prove her wrong next year (i'm thinking outlaw as its quite an easy course but IM Barcelona would be a nice weekend away) or do I just accept this slight and defamation?

*no comments about my lack of training for any race over the last 18 months!

That's slightly different from what I got which was "You aren't allowed to do another ironman..."

But yes, enter another one!

*both* of you enter.

You could probably enter the outlaw _this_ year and complete it. Might take closer to 17 hours than 8. :)

Jack I think my varying state of brokenness would preclude this year even if there were spaces (it is next weekend afterall!) I just would want to do myself justice (and would obviously need a new TT bike :D ) as I would want to go faster than last time at the outlaw (12.21) I know that I could have stripped 15 mins out just from transitions, plus another 25 from the bike leg without the mechnicals I had, which would leave my just shy of the 11:30 I had targeted. I would want to beat that next time.

bugger I think I might have to to prove a point...this could get expensive as I hadn't planned to buy a new bike until late 2016...I also might have to get myself a decent turbo too...one with power and potentially can hook up to zwift or something...

bugger.

*disappears to price up a new TT build*

But you would have to go at about half the speed as you did last time... well, not quite, but nearly.

Fair enough, if you are dragging two lifeless stumps for legs, broken back etc. But never underestimate the power of latent fitness and muscle memory.

its funny you should say that. I just went for a swim and did a very comfortable 1700m in 29'21. Which would be a reasonable pace to swim for an IM if I were so inclined. I'm going to use the watt bike this evening for a 30 min effort and see how that goes. But tbh I think the latent fitness would fail on the bike.

On the plus side, the back feels much better at the moment!

What's the worst that can happen though, apart from goals cemented, injuries sustained, training limited, targets revised, new kit panic bought, start line made, injury flares up and DNF? :?

I'm starting to see the logic here, i'm leaning towards the JFDI approach

She means:
1) you've gained a few pounds and I don't wanna be stuck with a fattie. Get training.
2) you're around too often. Get training so that I can watch the good wife, OITNB, greys anatomy in peace.
3) I want an expensive ring/dress/whatever she's into but I want you to cough out on your hobbies first
