Starting Weight 105kg
Previous weight 104.9kg
Current weight 103.4kg
Week loss 1.5kg
Total loss 1.6kg

Weighed on my repaired scales, which I repaired about a day after I ordered my all singing, all dancing Tanita Body fat scales.

So the realisation has sunk in that I'm trying to achieve 2 different things, that contradict each other.

a) Trying to lose weight
b) Improving strength.

I have been applying myself well to both and am fairly certain that I have increased muscle mass over body fat. So although sceptical about their accuracy I'm going to monitor BF on my new scales as well. At least I'll be able to see trends.

I don't buy into the idea that muscle weighs more than fat (a kilo of fat weighs the same as a kilo of muscle) but I could believe that I have replaced some fat for muscle.

Another valid point raised by Mr Fitzgerald in Racing Weight, was that, as atheletes, it's all or nothing. So if I can't do a 10km run or a 60km bike, it's not worth doing anything. When in fact a 30 min run could burn a very valuable 450 odd calories. So I'm going to fit in some more cardio even if just for weight loss purposes.

All that said, a challenging week lies ahead.

It's the density that's the difference mate. 1 cubic cm of muscle will weigh more than the same volume of fat, and muscle will also burn more calories at rest than the same amount of fat.

Fixed it for you

As Big_Unit has alluded to already, muscle is more dense than fat and does burn calories, even at rest. You need to lose fat not muscle

So i don't know my bf yet, but lets assume 20% (i think that is erring on the high side)
and lets also assume I am 100kg.
I would put a realistic bf target to be 15% ?
So are we saying, the lightest i can hope to be, is 95kg's ?

This is surprisingly accurate.

Just need to measure your waist round it's fattest part - without sucking it in, or pushing it out.

16.42 according to that.

By my more scientific method of bouncing up and down, naked, in front of a mirror, i still think 20% is closer.

It'll be interesting to see what the bf scales come out at, they should land tmro.

How many forum users have now been mentally scarred?! ;)

When your scales land, bear in mind that the electrickery passes through your body the shortest way so you'll get the BF% of your legs. Try having your right foot on one pad and your left hand on the other pad and multiplying the answer by two. Oh, and turn the pacemaker off before measuring. Hope that helps...?

That's a hell of a position to get into. I couldn't put my hand on the scales while standig one-legged on them. Is eing naked and jumping up and down optional then, or is it part of the measuring process?

On a more similar note, aren't uydration levels fairly important to try and standardise as well?

I am fairly sure Kev is having a larf, I may try both hands no legs.

The naked jumping is optional, but I'm sure once you've tried it, you will want to carry on.
