19 June 12 - Tuesday

Location: Lake 32

Garmin connect http://connect.garmin.com/activity/190727979

Training:
1 mile swim
2 x lake laps running straight after 26min 38 sec

Comments

Swim was difficult to start with only my second open water swim and 2nd time swimming front crawl quite pleased in the end. Sighting was vastly improved. Will time swim next time. Lake busy so lots of people overtaking me which ws good practice for the Great North Swim on Sunday.

Was a little unsteady on the run to start with it surprised me how my balance went from just the swim.
Was good for the confidence though and i think i will be fine for the Bradford upon Avon Aquathlon next week now.

A long long way to go but the first steps or strokes have been made :D

I get that after swimming sometimes - cold water in the inner ear?
Ear plugs work a treat in stopping it!

Could just be sudden change from horizontal to vertical, try a bit of strenuous leg kicking on the last length to the body ready, similar to fast spinning prior to dismounting on the bike.
Extinction is the rule. Survival is the exception.

Yeah. What Jon.e said.

Lots of thrashing around in the horizontal position - body diverts oxygen rich blood away from brain to the flailing limbs (are you using your legs as well as arms when swimming?).

Then you suddenly get up. Blood is now in legs (+ arms), but mainly round by your ankles by now. And as a consequence you feel light headed.

Having a cold head in the water just makes it worse, as that encourages blood to stay well away.

I'd read about the legs before and i thought id kicked a lot more on the way in (my normal swimming isn't hugely leg driven, they are big from playing front row and eat oxygen like no tomorrow) but maybe i need to do it even more. Appreciate all the comment and advice its much needed :D

Tried ear plug today combined with the kicking no loss of balance; cheers for the tips guys :D

21/06/12

2 hr Pool Session with Swindon Tri club (Cheers Nick for inviting me along ;) )
Mainly involved me breathing form the 70's tea towel holder whilst listening to what sounded like bingo calling - 5 50's at 30 House!
Cant remember quite the number of drills and at what interval etc as i was concentrating on the technique amendment.
Its been a while single I've been single and the catch, cup and pull never really worked for me then though I'm pleased to say that the coaches were excellent and I gained a hell of a lot out of the session that I wouldn't never of managed with a book technique wise and arm workout! Cant wait till next week.

22/06/12

750m Lake swim - really slow this morning and didn't want to push out the mile as my arms were really suffering after the first ever proper swim coaching session destroyed me last night; decided I better allow for a little recovery before the Great North Swim.
1.5 mile Jog - 14mins Avg HR 148 nice and gentle after the swim. Ear plug made a difference no loss of balance after the swim.

First Cycle
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/191793185

13 mile in 48mins
Avg speed 16.3mph Max speed 44 mph
Avg cadence 79
Avg HR 149

After getting over shitting myself i enjoyed it though very hard to try and keep a 90's cadence irrespective of gear.
Going to need a 28t cassette was in the lowest gear going up fairly small hills.
Going to be my weakest area it would seem need lots and lots of time in the saddle.
Back on the weight loss too, i thought it was a fairly flat track (it is) but even a slightly positive incline killed any speed.
Goodbye gut hello bike time :ninja:

24/06/12

Banbury Triathlon
Total time: 1hr 42 mins 11 sec

750m Swim 18 min 37 s
T1 2m 59s
Cycle 20k 53 min 11s
T2 1m 21s
Run 5k 26m

The great north swim wAs cancelled but managed to get in last minute to the banbury triathlon for my first attempt. A little premature was aiming for sub 2 hrs so was chiffed to bits. Crashing the bike on exit from transition wasnt much fun savagely let down by the cycling need to hill train. Still really pleased though and despite the rain had a great time. Really nice event and a good training sess.
