So what's the technique for going upstream? Quick arm turnover? Kick hard? Am glad I've only 375m upstream....

An imaginative title for yet another Scibby training log...

Postby scibby » 18 Jun 2014 14:22

So ow ell, kiddies asleep so time to update this.... Sssssshhhhhh. Not doing a RR as such as not that much to say but do want to put down my thoughts...

First of all results:

Actual / Target / Dream

Swim 0:18 / 0:18:00 / 0:17:00
Bike 1:01 / 1:05:00 / 1:00:00
Run 0:35 / 0:29:00 / 0:27:00
T1 and T2 0:06 / 0:04:00 / 0:04:00

Total 2:01:00 / 1:56:00 / 1:48:00

Starting from the top. Swim. wow, that was horrendous. The current was really strong. And I got myself in an awful position.. Add to that mass panic (more newbies in the sprint) but good god after battling lots of bodies to get across to the other side I was done in. I stood up to survey the mess. Bodies everywhere, and literally I was walking faster than most of them were swimming. It was awful. Anyway, pull myself together, figured a path out of the bodies and carried on. I swam almost literally along the boats to avoid more carnage. Got into a rhythm and tbh it felt fine. Until the buoy. Again bodies everywhere, I think it must've be 10-bodies wide at any point, trying to make the turn. Loads from the previous wave too. Loads of people being pushed by the current inside the buoy so having to make it up again... All that said I'm delighted with my 18min.

T1 was slow compared. To the field. Wetsuit got stuck on my timing chip. Faffed about. Meh

Bike was mostly fine. Loads of people on the course and tbh it was a pain to have to keep thinking about drafting and dropping back etc. I probably used it was an excuse to have a breather everything I got passed. Felt good enough though...

T2 I thought I did ok (feet out of shoes and dismount) but again, slow compared to field...

Run (plod). This is where my lack of endurance really showed up. I just couldn't be bothered! I kept promising myself I'd speed up after the next km, corner, switch back. But I never did. In truth I was tired. And my abs/side/stitch thing was really annoying me... So I just plodded and plodded... A bit annoyed at myself now but at the time I was pretty uncomfortable....

Overall I enjoyed it. Even despite the d and v. But I'm not sure I'll bother again. It's not a PB course. It's stupidly early, and it's stupidly expensive...

So that bit outta the way... Next steps:

1. I must fix whatever is going on with my abs/sides/ stitch problem.
2. I must fix my run
3. I must get out more on the bike....

I'm sorry i don't have a million clusters to go on about. Though I could add:

- I woke up in plenty of time
- I got there in plenty of time
- I sorted my transition areasout in plenty of time
- I got into my wetsuit in plenty of time
- I got into the water in plenty of time

See a pattern emerge?

I haven't decided if I'm doing it yet. Besides it's not the race for you. You're wowed by numbers, PA systems and funny jet ski acrobatics (or whatever that was ). This will have none of that. It's a proper low key simple event...

A lot of people do them with buggies full of kids. And some of them do them faster than me. (sub 20 mins).
